July 2021 Portrait of the Month — Roman Haar

Roman Haar

We are featuring this portrait of Roman Haar in honor of his 86th birthday on July 9th. Roman was a very young boy when Germany invaded Poland, turning his life upside-down and tearing apart his family.

This portrait of Roman was created at a workshop for 7th grade students at Calkins Road Middle School. The students are not much older than Roman was during the Holocaust. Stephanie Warchol, the teacher who led the workshop, has used this lesson multiple times in her classroom and we are always moved and impressed by what her students create. Stephanie said in an Instagram post of the students' portraits, "They are beautiful and haunting, and a meaningful tribute to these people who experienced the Holocaust."
