Create a Portrait
With just about 30 minutes you can create a remembrance portrait to add to this gallery.
The short, instructional videos will work for anyone, especially people who think they can’t draw at all. We encourage you to make a portrait and to send a copy to us for inclusion in the gallery. Here’s how:
Supplies needed
Paper
Charcoal (available from art supply stores)
Black and white pastels (such as Nupastels)
Paper to protect the table and paper towels to clean up
If pastels aren’t available you can use black and gray crayons.
How-to guide
Choose one of the subjects in the gallery or use a photograph of someone you would like to commemorate. Watch the 8-minute video “Art lesson: Movement of light and shadow.”
If using black and gray crayons watch the video called “Painting with crayons.”
Create your portrait.
Write your own first name and last initial on the front of the portrait.
Take a photograph of the portrait and submit it to us for inclusion in the Portrait Gallery.
If your subject is someone not in the gallery, please share the story of the person and tell us what it felt like to make the portrait.
